Gateman’s Tower c.1907 belonged to the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad, which operated from 1868 to 1960. City crossing gates were operated from towers such as this from 1907 to the 1960's. This tower originally stood southeast of the Front Street crossing. The former passenger station to the left was built in 1901, and across East Main Street to the right were the freight house and freight yards. A steam passenger train was at the Norwich station c. 1946.
