Barnwell State Park, near Blackville in South Carolina, was developed on land purchased in 1937 and was one of 16 state parks built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The CCC’s work still defines the park, with many of its buildings remaining in use and connecting present-day recreation to the site’s New Deal beginnings. The park includes opportunities for picnicking, fishing, hiking, and camping, and its lakes allow boats without engines. Additional features include a playground, picnic shelters, a volleyball area, a fishing pier, a community building, a park store, and rentals for fishing equipment and non-motorized boats.
