Building a Park System
Merrimac, Wisconsin
· The CCC and Wisconsin State Parks: 1933-1942
History

The CCC operated camps in eleven Wisconsin State Parks and more than sixty other locations across the state. More than sixty thousand men served in state parks and made lasting landscape and building improvements, many of which remain today. Crews at this site and elsewhere in Wisconsin worked under the philosophy that all built structures should blend with their natural surroundings. This rustic style featured massive hand-hewn timbers, native stone, and meticulously hand-placed stone walkways that seem to grow out of the landscape. CCC-built structures at Devil's Lake are marked with the CCC logo.
