Devil's Lake State Park in the Baraboo Range is Wisconsin's largest and most visited state park, known for a 360-acre lake set beneath 500-foot quartzite bluffs. Its striking landscape was formed about 12,000 years ago when glacial moraines blocked a gap and created the lake, leaving talus slopes, unusual rock formations, and forested hills. The area has been important to Native peoples for thousands of years, with ancient effigy mounds still present. After becoming a resort area in the 1800s and early 1900s, it was established as a park in 1911. Civilian Conservation Corps workers later built many lasting facilities, and today it is a major destination for hiking, climbing, and natural heritage.
