From the coal camp in Helen, West Virginia, this one-room dwelling dates to the early 1920s and was built for and occupied by a single miner or by a married miner living away from home during the work week while working in the coal mines. The married miner would return home to his family on the weekends. Warm and dry, it provided only the bare necessities, with just enough space for a chair, stove, bed, and a few essentials. It stood in contrast to the nearby Miner's House and the relatively lavish Superintendent's House.
