The Bayles Building was used as a post office from 1854 through 1858. In 1856, the famous Norwegian skier and mailman Snowshoe Thompson picked up his first mail here. His courage and perseverance carried mail, medicine and supplies across the impassable winter Sierra Nevada mountains to settlers in Nevada, and this dedication and service lasted many years.
