Built in 1883 in rural southwestern Ohio, Ballard Road Covered Bridge spans Caesar's Creek and survives as one of Greene County's covered bridges and the only one still open to road traffic. James E. Brown built it to a design by H.E. Hebble and named it for local industrialist Lyman Ballard, who had established a water-powered grain mill nearby decades earlier. The single-span bridge uses a seven-panel Howe truss, a once-common nineteenth-century form that later became rare in Ohio. Built of wood and iron on limestone abutments, it remained significant enough to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
