At Stony Hill School, nineteen-year-old teacher Bernard J. Cigrand and his students held the first recognized observance of “Flag Birth Day” on June 14, 1885, using a flag ten inches high with 38 stars standing in a bottle on the teacher’s desk. After thirty-one years of crusading by Dr. Cigrand, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the national observance of Flag Day on June 14, 1916.
