Lizard Mound State Park in Farmington, north of West Bend, preserves one of Wisconsin’s largest and best-preserved collections of effigy mounds. Established as a state park in 1950, it contains 28 surviving mounds, including bird forms, long-tailed animal shapes often called panthers, and the distinctive Lizard Mound. These earthworks are associated with Effigy Mound Builders who lived in Wisconsin and nearby areas roughly between A.D. 500 and A.D. 1000, though construction here may have continued later. Archaeology found burials in pits beneath the mounds with artifacts such as pottery, pipes, and beads. Once part of a larger group, the site remains significant despite earlier losses.
