Pomme de Terre Wildlife Management Area
Nature
Pomme de Terre Wildlife Management Area is a 6,434-acre protected tract in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana, managed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. Dominated by the Pomme de Terre swamp, about 60 percent of the area is open water and marsh, with distinctive wetland plants and a swamp-and-ridge landscape that supports varied tree and understory communities. In 1989, the department and Ducks Unlimited began a restoration project affecting about 1,200 acres, using water-control structures to improve hydrology in the forested wetlands. The area remains an important part of Louisiana’s wildlife management system and wetland ecology.
