Erik Albertson, the first Worshipful Master of Mendocino Lodge No. 179, Free and Accepted Masons, undertook construction of the Masonic Hall in 1866. Albertson carved "Time and the Maiden," the statue that adorns the roof, from a single virgin redwood trunk. In 1883, the hall was moved to its present location to allow for widening of the streets.
