Pat Weinberger and her husband Larry moved from Akron, Ohio, to Ojai in 1968, and she soon worked to shape the future of the Ojai Valley by helping secure through an Act of Congress the preservation of 3,500 acres around Lake Casitas as the Teague Memorial Watershed, preventing land zoned for 10,000 new homes from being developed, stopping a proposed freeway through Ojai from Carpinteria to Santa Paula and a four-lane Highway 33 from Casitas Springs into Ojai, and defeating a five-mile-long phosphate mine atop Pine Mountain. She wished to be remembered for her love of men, dogs, cats, champagne, and Lake Casitas. The people of the Ojai Valley also gave thanks to those whose courage, skill, and devotion fought the Wheeler Fire of July 1985, which devastated 119,361 acres, and to the more than 3,000 men and women from local, state, federal, and private agencies whose efforts averted catastrophe. They likewise honored Cory Iverson, a Cal Fire engineer from Escondido who died on December 14, 2017, while fighting the Thomas Fire, the largest wildfire in California history, which burned 281,000 acres and destroyed more than 1,000 structures in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, and they expressed gratitude to him and the other 8,500 firefighters who protected the valley from further devastation.
