Van Camp was a village settled in the early 1800s and named in the 1840s for pioneer Steven Van Camp and his family. John and Margaret Van Camp gave land for the Methodist E. Church in 1879, where services continued into the 1940s. The cemetery dates to 1851, and the family also gave the site for a school that operated circa 1870 to 1920. A post office and general store served the community, and the Clarksburg Northern Railroad provided access to the village until the early 20th century.
