The Sistersville Ferry operated from 1815 to 2003 as the longest continuously working mode of transportation in Monroe County. It crossed the Ohio River between Fly, Ohio, and Sistersville, West Virginia, at the apex of the river’s longest straight stretch. This section, called the Long Reach, runs about twenty miles; from there Beavertown can be seen seven and a half miles to the south, and Sardis five miles to the north. The ferry is near the site where George Washington encamped during a survey trip to the west on October 25, 1770.
