In 1886 Henry Washburn's Yosemite Stage and Turnpike Co. began daily stage service from Raymond to Wawona and on to Yosemite Valley. Only the wealthy could afford the $45 round trip after leaving the train at Wildcat Junction, also known as Raymond, and boarding a stage that changed horses at Summit House, Grub Gulch, and the Gambetta Mine. Mine tailings remain visible on the mountain. The trip continued to the Ahwahnee Tavern, the midway point for a cool rest and lunch, then to Miami Lodge for a fresh team of horses, and ended at the Wawona Hotel after a 12 hour stage ride. Completion of the Yosemite Valley Railroad in 1906, and later Highway 140, ended the stage runs.
