After moving to Chicago in 1889, Octave Chanute began working on heavier-than-air flight, which he called "the problem of the ages." He corresponded with people around the world who were interested in flight, gathered as much information as he could find, and examined records of experiments going back 300 years. He devoted his full time to flight until his death.
