Four miles northeast, at the junction of Cane Creek and the Tellico River, Fort Loudoun’s garrison, which had surrendered to Attakullakulla and other Cherokee chiefs, was betrayed on Aug. 9, 1760, while returning under safe conduct to Charleston. Twenty-five were killed, and 200 were enslaved and later ransomed by the Colonial Government.
