The Cathedral of Junk is a folk art environment in the backyard of a private residence in Austin’s West Congress neighborhood, created by Vince Hannemann after he moved from Santa Fe in 1989. Built from salvaged and discarded materials, it grew into a three-story structure about 30 feet tall and became one of Austin’s best-known examples of outsider and vernacular art. In 2010, code enforcement threatened its future, requiring permits, occupancy approval, and removal of electrical wiring. After negotiations and changes that removed much of the structure, an agreement allowed it to remain under restrictions. It has since remained a distinctive local landmark recognized in film, television, books, and online video.
