In 1947, C.J. Stark opened the original Skyline Club in North Austin. For the better part of a half century, its giant neon sign heralded performers including Patsy Cline, Roger Miller, Elvis Presley, Hank Thompson, Lefty Frizzell, The Geezinslaws, and many other musical headliners of the era. Hank Williams Sr. and Johnny Horton gave their last public concerts there under the sign. Since 1981, the sign had been stored in Bee Cave, Texas, awaiting a return as a visible part of Austin's history. When the equally revered Hill's Cafe reopened in May 2001, the two were united to help preserve Austin's historical character.
