Born in 1782 in Dublin, Ireland, the 4th Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps died in 1843 in Stanford, Kentucky. He commanded Marines on the Ganges in the naval war with France, commanded Marines on the Constitution in the Barbary War, and served in the War of 1812.
