An original monument was erected in 1867 by soldiers in the Third Infantry to honor fellow soldiers who lost their lives at Fort Larned. After Fort Larned closed in 1878, the monument was moved to the Larned Cemetery in 1887, and in 2009 it was returned to the site of the original Fort Larned cemetery. Although some of the original inscriptions have been lost, part of the surviving text identifies J. B. McIntyre, Col. USA, who died at Fort Larned, Kansas, on May 9, 1867, as one of the officers who, on extra duty, maintained the honor of his country gallantly during the days of the recent rebellion.
