On Lot 21 in 1806, Revolutionary War veteran Peter "the Pioneer" Sutton and his family established a two-story log tavern and later added a dry goods store. These Victorian structures came to symbolize the civic and entrepreneurial spirit of Indiana County's pioneer families. Peter's grandson John took A.W. Wilson as a partner and founded Sutton & Wilson, and in 1858 they built a two-story brick structure for their thriving mercantile. Next door, the taller A.W. Wilson & Son building followed in 1880, and the two buildings were used as a team. The Suttons and Wilsons were leaders in business, finance, education, and social reform. Sutton Hall at IUP was named in honor of John Sutton's enormous contribution to education. John's wife, Mary Walker Sutton, taught at Indiana Female Seminary, worked for the Underground Railroad, organized Civil War soldiers' relief efforts, and organized the Women's Christian Temperance Union. In 1902, the site also housed S and T Bank's first location. Other businesses here included a furniture store, an undertaker, a gentleman's clothing store, and Indiana Hardware Company from 1907 to 1957, when it became True Value Hardware. These two buildings are now united again and are home to The Coney, a family business begun in Indiana in 1933.
