Sterling Hill is an 833-foot mountain in Sussex County, New Jersey, within the Pimple Hills, overlooking the Wallkill River and Ogdensburg to the southeast. Its name derives from Lord Stirling, who owned the land in the eighteenth century and operated a zinc mine there. That association ties the hill to the region’s early mining past as well as its landscape. The industrial legacy connected with the site survives nearby at the Sterling Hill Mining Museum, which preserves the history of zinc mining in the area.
