Shelby Furnaces were a major source of pig iron for the Confederacy, furnishing iron to the Selma arsenal for heavy cannon and naval armor plate. The furnaces were destroyed in 1865 by Wilson’s Cavalry raiders U.S.A. Rebuilt 1873, they closed in 1923.
