Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, south of Birmingham, is Alabama’s largest state park, centered on Double Oak Mountain and encompassing nearly 10,000 acres. Created through the State Land Act of 1927 and greatly expanded in 1943, it was heavily shaped by Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration work in the 1930s and early 1940s, with stone structures from that era still visible. The park has developed into a major outdoor destination for hiking, camping, fishing, cycling, BMX, golf, and other recreation. It also serves ecological and educational purposes through the Alabama Wildlife Center and the Oak Mountain Interpretive Center.
