North Oklahoma Botanical Garden and Arboretum, on the campus of Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa, began in 1901 with the founding of the college and grew into a significant part of the campus under president Lynn Glover from 1911 to 1916. Over time it developed into a diverse public garden with an arboretum, butterfly display, and specialized herb, perennial, rose, and sensory gardens. A major expansion came in February 1993 with a 2,016-square-foot Quonset greenhouse built for annual bedding plants, supporting thousands of spring plantings. In 1995, the planting of 150 redbuds launched the annual Redbud Festival and tied the garden to a lasting campus tradition.
