Hayes State Park, formally Walter J. Hayes State Park, lies in Michigan’s Irish Hills at the southeast corner of Wamplers Lake. Encompassing 654 acres, it provides access to Wamplers Lake and completely surrounds Round Lake, which connects to Wamplers by a channel for smaller boats. Dedicated in 1920, it was among the first 25 parks created by the Michigan State Parks Commission. Originally known as Cedar Hills State Park and Adrian State Park, it expanded from an initial 99 acres and was renamed in 1930 after the Hayes family following a land donation. In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps helped develop the park, which remains a popular lake-centered recreation area.
