Hidden Lake Gardens is a seven hundred fifty-five-acre botanical garden and arboretum in southeastern Michigan, operated by Michigan State University. It grew from land bought by Harry Fee after his nineteen twenty-six retirement; when farming failed, he transformed the property during the Great Depression into designed landscape scenes built on its natural features. In nineteen forty-five he donated the gardens and an endowment to the university, supporting their growth as a public garden and educational site. Today the grounds combine extensive natural areas with major plant collections, including rare and dwarf conifers, hostas, conservatory gardens, and bonsai, while forests, wetlands, and trails preserve much of the landscape.
