William Pentecost served three years in the Revolutionary War from Dinwiddie County, Virginia, in Buford’s Detachment and lost an arm at Waxhaws on May 29, 1780. He was remembered as a successful businessman, educator, and civic worker, but most outstanding as a devout Methodist minister. He is credited with establishing five churches, including Pentecost Methodist Church in 1785. William and Delilah Pentecost were buried in a family plot, and in 1909 their bodies were re-interred in a single grave in the Pentecost Church cemetery.
