Mickey Hot Springs
Nature
Mickey Hot Springs is a compact thermal spring system in southeastern Oregon at the north end of the Alvord Desert near Steens Mountain. Smaller than nearby 2-6 Hot Springs, it is distinguished by intense geothermal activity in a stark desert landscape. The site contains bubbling mudpots, steam vents, and at least 60 vents, including 11 dry ones. Temperatures range from 77 to 212 degrees Fahrenheit, averaging about 171 degrees, making most vents too hot for bathing. Its neutral to slightly alkaline waters support heat-loving organisms arranged in temperature-based zones, and the hydrothermal field may be in a waning stage, adding scientific interest.
