A trail designated in 2005 links major Wyoming mining sites associated with gold, iron ore, and uranium, each important in the state's history. Gold found at the Carissa lode in 1867 triggered Wyoming's largest rush to the South Pass region, and towns such as Miners Delight and Atlantic City grew to support miners before the gold quickly played out and most residents left, leaving boom-town remains behind. The region also later hosted the highest open pit iron ore mine in the United States, which operated from 1962 until 1984. In the Yellowcake region, the 1953 uranium discovery in the Gas Hills by Neil M. McNeice, known as Lucky Mc, brought a stampede of prospectors and turned Home on the Range, a gas station and post office, into the thriving community of Jeffrey City, but as mining sharply declined, Jeffrey City's streets had emptied by 1988.
