White River State Park is a 267-acre urban park and cultural district along both banks of the White River in downtown Indianapolis, uniting major attractions such as museums, the zoo, sports and entertainment venues, gardens, trails, and the Downtown Canal. Conceived in the late 1970s to strengthen the city through sports and tourism, it was built on cleared industrial land beginning in the 1980s and developed gradually as attractions opened from 1988 onward. Its history includes unrealized plans, the controversial demolition of Oscar McCulloch School Number 5, memorials to four civic leaders killed in 1992, and the preservation of older landmarks woven into the park’s civic landscape.
