Built by the Works Progress Administration, the Yaquina Bay Bridge is 3,260 feet long. About 220 men were employed 30 hours each week from Aug. 1, 1934 until its opening on Sept. 6, 1936. During the first ten hours after the bridge opened, 5,290 cars crossed the span. Conde B. McCullough supervised the design and construction of the Yaquina Bay Bridge, Umpqua River Bridge, and Coos Bay Bridge. Until these bridges were built, it was not possible to travel the Oregon coast without being ferried across water.
