Nature
Rich Mountain is a 4,246-foot peak in the Blue Ridge near Boone, about seven miles south-southwest of town within Moses H. Cone Memorial Park in North Carolina. Its place in the Blue Ridge Parkway landscape has protected it from development and helped preserve its wooded character. The mountain also has a modest but notable human history: from 1922 to 1985, its western side was home to Camp Yonahlossee, one of North Carolina’s oldest all-girls camps, whose Cherokee name means “Trail of the Bear.” Today that site serves as a resort and club. Rich Mountain’s slopes also feed streams flowing toward both the South Fork New River and the Watauga River.
