Built in 1924, C.A. Bower and Son Grocery served the Monterey area for more than 50 years. Nearby, a 10-cent store offered notions, clothing, and toys. Monterey Hardware Co., owned by partners Dr. L.P. and Maggie Speck and M.B. and Sallie Sehon, stocked a large hardware inventory that included paint, sporting goods, farming implements, tools, and dynamite. Vaden's Grocery, owned and operated by Paul and Annette Vaden for more than 45 years, offered a full grocery line and free delivery. At the end of the block, the Palace Theater featured Hollywood's latest releases on Monday through Friday evenings and westerns on Saturday night with an early afternoon matinée.
