On April 13, 1864, while on a mission to clear the area of Confederate States of America forces, Colonel Geo. W. Gallup and United States of America troops repulsed a Confederate attack led by Lieutenant Colonel E. F. Clay at Paintsville and pursued the enemy to this point. Union men attacked again the next day. Clay was mortally wounded, the Confederate States of America suffered 60 casualties, and 60 men, 200 horses, 400 saddles, and 300 small arms were taken, while the United States of America sustained only slight losses.
