Mount Skylight, a 4,924-foot Adirondack summit in New York, is the state's fourth-highest peak and one of the 46 High Peaks in Adirondack Park, near Mount Marcy. Named in 1857 by artist Frederick S. Perkins and guide Orson Schofield Phelps for a rock formation near the top resembling a skylight, it became part of the early exploration and mapping of the Adirondack interior when Phelps, surveyor Verplanck Colvin, and two others made the first known ascent on August 28, 1873. Known for its open, bare summit, Skylight offers broad views of 30 major peaks and remains a classic destination for long hikes and backpacking trips.
