Brady’s old McCulloch County jail, completed in 1910 as the county’s second jail after an unreliable 1878 predecessor, became one of the city’s best-known historic buildings and now houses the Heart of Texas Historical Museum. Built of red brick in the Richardson Romanesque style by the Southern Structural Steel Company of San Antonio, the three-story structure combined jail and residence, with prisoners on the second floor and living quarters below. Its features included twin towers and a hanging ring with trap door. Floods damaged the building in 1936 and 1938, and after a new jail opened in 1974, it was restored and repurposed as a museum by 1976.
