Latrobe, the youngest town acquisition of El Dorado County, owes its origin to the Placerville and Sacramento Valley Railroad, which established a station for neighboring Amador County at this crossing of the roads. The town began with the completion of the railroad and was platted by Chief Engineer F. Bishop. He named the town after B. Latrobe, the civil engineer in charge of building the first railroad in the United States.
