Belle Wilcox Baruch loved Hobcaw Barony and planned for future generations to understand and learn from its forests, marshes, and beaches. In 1936, Bellefield Plantation became her winter home, where she enjoyed horseback riding, flying, and the property's natural beauty. Her appreciation grew into a strong obligation to maintain and protect Hobcaw's resources. Through her will, she established the Belle W. Baruch Foundation, which owns and operates the property for research and teaching in forestry, wildlife ecology, and marine biology. Her commitment preserved the unique environment of Hobcaw Barony.
