Waccamaw Neck is a long, narrow peninsula on South Carolina’s coast between the Atlantic Ocean and the Waccamaw River, on the Grand Strand between Myrtle Beach and Georgetown. Including Pawleys Island and the mainland communities of Litchfield Beach and North Litchfield Beach, it has a long human history. The area served as hunting and fishing ground for the prehistoric Waccamaw people, while its river side later developed into rice plantations and its ocean side into summer homes for planters’ families from colonial times into the early 20th century. Today it is both a seaside resort community and home to significant cultural and natural sites.
