On this site on July 5, 1781, after a forced march from Newport, Rhode Island, Comte de Rochambeau arrived with 5,000 men sent by the French government to aid in the American struggle for independence. Gen. George Washington met with Gen. Rochambeau and reviewed the troops during the encampment. American and French forces joined in Westchester County under Washington’s command for the march to Yorktown, Virginia, and the defeat of Gen. Charles Cornwallis on October 13, 1781.
