Newton Falls Covered Bridge in Newton Falls, Ohio, built around 1831 on the Town lattice truss plan, is one of the state’s most important surviving early covered bridges. Spanning the east branch of the Mahoning River, it is notable for a covered pedestrian walkway added in 1921 for schoolchildren going to Center Street, a feature that makes it Ohio’s only covered bridge with a covered crosswalk. It is considered the state’s second-oldest existing covered bridge and the oldest still in use on its original site. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, it remains Trumbull County’s last surviving covered bridge.
