The Winona meteorite, associated with Winona, Arizona, is the type specimen of the winonaite group and the largest known example of it. Classified as a primitive achondrite, it preserves primitive characteristics while also showing differentiation. Its discovery has traditionally been linked to a September 1928 excavation at the Sinagua village of Elden Pueblo, though later clarification placed the find at another Sinagua site. Heavily weathered, it broke apart when removed, and a 1929 description judged it too altered for accurate classification. Later study identified it more securely and established its central role in defining the winonaite group.
