Nature
The Double Mountains in Stonewall County, Texas, are two isolated, flat-topped buttes about thirteen miles southwest of Aspermont, rising five hundred to eight hundred feet above the plains along the divide between the Salt Fork Brazos and Double Mountain Fork Brazos watersheds. The eastern summit is the county’s highest point, and the buttes’ height, visibility, and broad tops have made them important regional landmarks since at least 1788. They guided trails and expeditions, served buffalo hunters, and figure in Comanche history, including associations with Quanah Parker. A nearby settlement founded in 1886 later declined into a ghost town by the 1980s.
