In 1875, Sheridan founder Eugene Rogers buried his friend Quincy Stanclift here, and after Rogers married Quincy Stanclift’s sister Adelaide, the site became the family’s private cemetery. In 1888, Rogers sold two acres next to this site to Sheridan Lodge #312, IOOF, with David Speidel, George Greitman, and Josiah Hoffman as trustees on the deed, establishing the IOOF Cemetery here. In 1921, Sheridan’s Russian Colony of 17 families established a cemetery on colony land adjacent to the IOOF site. In 1925, Public Cemetery District #1 was formed by county supervisors in response to a citizen’s petition, and it soon became Placer County, with the district including all of present western Placer County. In 1928, Sheridan Lodge #312 deeded its three-acre plot, including the original one-acre private cemetery, to the district, with IOOF trustees Chris Haenny, Joe Ruffinelli, and H.W. Covington on the deed. In 1970, the Russian Colony Cemetery, also known as Sheridan Molokan Church Cemetery Association, was transferred to Placer County Cemetery District #1 by trustees Jack Susoeff, Wm. Bogdonoff, and Wm. Popoff.
