Okefenokee Wilderness is a vast protected area in southeastern Georgia within the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, preserving one of the region’s largest undeveloped wetland landscapes in the heart of the swamp. Established under the Wilderness Act of 1974, it was set aside to keep this landscape in a primitive condition for future generations by barring activities such as timber harvesting, farming, and road building. Recreation is permitted, including fishing, hiking, canoeing, and wildlife observation, but access is intentionally limited and low-impact. Managed as part of the national wilderness system, it remains defined by remoteness, water travel, quiet observation, and minimal development.
