At Thornrose Cemetery, 870 Confederate dead are recorded as buried there by name, company, and regiment, including 385 from Virginia, 176 from North Carolina, 59 from South Carolina, 208 from Georgia, 49 from Alabama, 8 from Florida, 11 from Mississippi, 19 from Louisiana, 12 from Tennessee, 20 from Arkansas, 3 from Texas, and 207 recorded by name only. Around the shaft are also gathered the remains of about 700 Confederate soldiers not recorded by name, from the fields of Allegheny, McDowell, Cross Keys, Port Republic, and Piedmont. The inscriptions praise their duty, integrity of principle, noble sacrifice, patient endurance of suffering, heroism in death, and fidelity and patriotism, and declare that Virginia forgets none who died in her defense.
