Built in the summer of 1758 at present-day Bedford, Pennsylvania, Fort Bedford was a British post on Forbes Road during the campaign against Fort Duquesne. Planned by Colonel Henry Bouquet after Braddock's failed expedition, it was a five-bastioned log fort that protected supplies and communications and served chiefly as a major depot and headquarters. Though not directly attacked in Pontiac's War, it sheltered a small garrison and local families while nearby settlements and supply trains were raided. The site later served frontier defense in the Revolutionary War before being abandoned. Its exact location is uncertain, but its 1758 powder magazine survives and is considered the only existing man-made French and Indian War structure in the continental United States.
