George Washington was remembered as “First in war - first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.” On October 19 and 20, 1794, while in Bedford, he used this building as his headquarters as President and in charge of the United States Army enroute to quell the Whiskey Insurrection in western Pennsylvania.
